Ae and oe are only if the vowels a, o articulate in one syllable with the vowel e (as in position pet), just like ai and oi are a and o pronounced together with i. slenderly confusingly, in Tolkiens literary productions the digraph oe is sometimes also used to advert umlauted o, on the face of it the same sound as German ÃÆ'¶ (actually we often prefer the spelling ÃÆ'¶ in this article, to neutralize confusion). By the end of the triplet Age, ÃÆ'¶ had merged with e (thats why the Grey Mountains appear as Ered Mithrin and not ÃÆ'â€rÃÆ'¶d Mithrin on the social occasion to LotR!), but we still need to refer to this sound when discussing out of date Sindarin.'
